Intro: For this project we were tasked with developing a vacation destination. The one guideline we had to follow was the this location had to be located underwater. This desired location for the vacation however, did not have to be feasible. We were given a list, and chose 8 different underwater geographical features that would represent different aspects of a resort. There were many possibilities for this project so it required a good amount of imagination and creativity. Also this was not a group activity, so there was no one else who could supply ideas. We were given two days to complete this project and I did so in a timely manner.
Key Concepts: Black or White Smokers: black smokers are chimneys formed from deposits of iron sulfide, which are black and white smokers are chimneys formed from deposits of barium, calcium, and silicon, which are white Volcanoes: underwater vents or fissures in the Earth's surface from which magma can erupt Trenches: steep depressions in the deepest parts of the ocean where old ocean crust from one tectonic plate is pushed beneath another plate Continental Slope: the slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor Deep Sea Floor: the deepest point in the ocean Seamounts: a submarine mountain Coral Reef: a ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral
Conclusion: Overall I feel like this project was not only fun but also extremely informative. It wasn't like the usual projects that I am used to where we are in groups and all working together. I enjoyed completing this project independently because I never had to follow anyone else's instructions, but rather could work at my own pace. At first I was stumped as to where this destination would be and how I would create it because of the guidelines we had to follow. After doing some research I quickly found ideas that I could link to other hotels on land. After doing this it was much easier to create the rest of it. One thing I was surprised at that I did well was my artistic ability. This was the key aspect of the project and usually art is not my strong suit. Another thing I think I did well was time management. Sometimes I will find myself falling behind in a group setting, so this was a nice change of pace. I would advise that this project be continued in future years.
