History of Marine Biology Introduction For this project we were tasked with creating a timeline that included a description of the history of marine biology. Along with this came many different subjects and topics that are involved in the long history. The first step of this project was to research the people, machinery, and just overall different aspects that make up the history of this complex concept. There were four sections that were divided evenly between my group mates and I. Each section covered 5-6 topics about the history which we researched in order to find the date of creation or establishment, a description of it, and lastly the significance of that particular aspect. After that we created a timeline in chronological order that contained the information we obtained from our research. We were tasked with giving a 2-3 sentence general explanation of the concept along with a colorful illustration of it.
Key concepts Marine Biology: The general science of biology applied to the sea. Oceanography: The scientific study of oceans Mariners: Ancient Pacific Islanders and Phoenicians Aristotle: First marine biologist Explorers: Leif Eriksson, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, James Cook Charles Darwin: Proposed theory of evolution Marine labs: Used to conduct long term studies SCUBA: Self contained underwater breathing apparatus Satellite imagery: Monitor global temperature, weather, algae production, and pollution FLIP: Floating instrument platform Alvin: Deep sea submersible that can cover 99% of ocean floor ROV: Remote operated vehicle used to research observe oceans Crittercam: Camera attached to an organism to track habits and gain information. AUV: Autonomous underwater vehicles NOAA: Equipped with telepresence technology to view the ocean floor
Conclusion Overall for being the first project and for not knowing anyone in my group, I think it went well. Along with it being a first interaction with new people, i feel there were other areas that I excelled in. One of these was leadership. I feel that I took the reigns when it came to the creation of the timeline as well as the researching process. I quickly realized that the group was lacking a leader and someone to facilitate the work at hand. I stepped up and did my very best to get all of my work finished in a timely manner. Another thing I believe I did well at was communicating and collaborating with my team. Although I had no prior interactions with my group I feel like we all connected quickly and were able to converse effortlessly. However, given this, I do feel there areas that could have been improved drastically. One example of this was how we managed our time as a group. After being given a day to work on the project, I realized that we were falling behind and that we weren't on track to finish on the due date. For next time we will work on time management. Another thing that could have used improvement was the distribution of jobs. Often I found that one person would be working on the timeline while the other three were jobless. For the future I think a good idea would be to have multiple people working on the project at once to speed up the process and boost our completion date.
